To Facility Manager:
This page describes operations related to Password Protection and Hard
Drive Maintenance. In order to protect the security of these features, this
page should be removed from the manual and stored in a safe place.
SPECIAL STARTUP OPTIONS MENU
Features that affect the security of the files stored in the Shortcut Editor are accessed
through the SPECIAL STARTUP OPTIONS menu. These features include:
1. FORMAT INTERNAL DRIVE
2. PASSWORDS: ENABLED / DISABLED
3. SET MASTER PASSWORD
4. ENABLE / DISABLE SOFTCODE
5. INSTALL SOFT CODE
6. CHECK FILE SYSTEM
The SPECIAL STARTUP OPTIONS menu is accessed by holding the STOP key while
turning on the power. Continue to hold it until the menu appears, or there is an error
message. (Release STOP and press EXIT to bypass an error message.) It is necessary to hold
STOP during the entire start up sequence.
Format Internal Drive
This menu selection is used when a new hard disk is installed, when it is desired to
completely erase the drive, or if there is a problem with the unit that can only be corrected by
reformatting. Reformatting will irrevocably remove all audio information from the
hard disk. The file system will be completely rebuilt, passwords will be removed, and all
Directory names will be removed.
The Display will show:
FORMAT INTERNAL DRIVE (READY)
WARNING: FORMAT ERASES ALL FILES
PRESS ‘ERASE’ FOR STANDARD FORMAT
PRESS ‘ALT+ERASE’ FOR LOW LEVEL FORMAT
PRESS ‘EXIT’ TO CANCEL
Formatting will begin when the ERASE key is pressed. If the ALT key is held when ERASE
is pressed, a LOW LEVEL FORMAT will be performed. This should only be done on the advice of
a 360 Systems technician, or when the hard drive is showing signs of failure. It can take several
hours to complete a low-level format. The advantage is that the hard drive’s diagnostic systems
may reassign bad sectors if possible. In some cases this will restore a drive to normal operation.
Passwords
Password protection is turned on or off with this menu selection. Press the ENTER key to
set to ENABLED or DISABLED.
Set Master Password
In addition to the passwords for the individual directories, this menu item allows creation
of a Master Password that will allow access to any directory. The Display will show:
ENTER NEW MASTER PASSWORD
¦_____________________________
PRESS ‘ENTER’ TO CONTINUE
On completion, the Display will show “PASSWORD CHANGED” or “PASSWORD NOT
CHANGED”.
Reprogramming a Lost Password
To reprogram a lost Directory password, first disable passwords in the SPECIAL STARTUP
OPTIONS menu. Then EXIT to normal operation and set a new password for the Directory in
DIRECTORY PREFS. (When PASSWORDS are DISABLED, the Display will not ask for the existing
lost password to allow reprogramming.) There is no way to retrieve the old password.
The Master Password is always freely reprogrammable in the SPECIAL STARTUP menu.
Formatting a drive will remove all passwords.
Enable / Disable Softcode
Softcode allows the addition of new features by loading additional software code into
Shortcut. This code is stored on the hard drive, and if Enabled loads during the startup process.
When Softcode is installed (see below), it is automatically enabled on the next power up.
In the SPECIAL STARTUP OPTIONS menu, when Softcode is enabled the menu item is displayed
as 4. DISABLE SOFT CODE. To disable Softcode and run from the onboard program memory,
select this item and press Enter or simply press the “4” key. The Display will show:
CHANGING SETTING
PLEASE WAIT
To re-enable, in the SPECIAL STARTUP OPTIONS menu, select 4. ENABLE SOFT CODE and
press Enter, or press the “4” key.
If there is no valid Softcode loaded on the drive, the Display will show:
* COULD NOT CHANGE SETTING *
MAKE SURE SOFTCODE IS INSTALLED
Install Soft Code
This item allow the installation of new Softcode. Place a Zip disk containing Softcode
into the External Zip drive. (It can be either a 100 or a 250 Mb drive, connected to either the
Parallel or the optional Expansion connector. Remember to set which port is in use in the Setup
menu in normal operation.)
In the SPECIAL STARTUP OPTIONS menu, select item 5. INSTALL SOFT CODE and press
ENTER, or press the “5” key. Follow the directions in the Display to complete the operation.
Once complete, turn off the power and the Softcode will be active on the next power up; there
is no need to hold STOP.
CHECK FILE SYSTEM runs a diagnostic routine that verifies several attributes of the file
system. For the most part, this need only be run in the event that there are problems
encountered. The exception to this is that in certain heavy editing applications, the file system
may abandon small areas of the drive. This results in less than the full drive being available for
recording. Run Check File System if you suspect this has happened, or at least once a year as
routine maintenance.
This operation will not normally disturb the contents of the hard drive.
However, we recommend that backups always be kept current, and any
valuable recordings be backed up before any hard drive maintenance is
attempted.
In the SPECIAL STARTUP OPTIONS menu, select 6. Check File System or press the “6” key.
The Display will show:
CHECK FILE SYSTEM
REPAIR ANY FOUND PROBLEMS?
PRESS ‘Y’ OR ‘N’
Press the “Y” key, and the Display will show “CHECKING AND REPAIRING FILE SYSTEM”
while the operations takes place. The time for this will vary with the number of files and their
size. Pressing “N” will perform just the Check routine. When the process is done a report will
be generated, which is normally:
RESULTS OF CHECK FILE SYSTEM
ALL FILES OK
PRESS ‘ENTER’ TO CONTINUE
If you performed the check only and errors are detected, then press EXIT and run the
routine again by pressing “6”, then “Y”.
